Preserving Our Legacy: Why Breeders Must Invest in the Next Generation

By Kathy Musto

Every successful breeding program represents years—often decades—of thoughtful planning, careful selection, and unwavering dedication. The quality, consistency, and reputation of a kennel are not built overnight. Yet without the next generation of breeders, even the finest bloodlines and breeding programs risk disappearing.

As breeders, we have a responsibility to preserve the legacy we’ve worked so hard to create. That means more than producing exceptional dogs; it means producing knowledgeable people. Mentoring newcomers ensures that the values, ethics, and breed knowledge we’ve gained through experience continue long after we step away from the whelping box or the show ring.

However, mentorship is a two-way street. Being a good mentor also requires having a good mentee. The best students are those who are eager to learn, ask thoughtful questions, and remain open to constructive criticism. Experience cannot be replaced by internet searches or social media opinions. The wisdom shared by seasoned breeders comes from years of successes, mistakes, and lessons learned.
A good mentee listens—not just to hear, but to understand. They recognize that advice is offered to help them avoid unnecessary setbacks and to protect the integrity of the breed. While every breeder will eventually develop their own style and make independent decisions, those choices should be built upon a strong foundation of knowledge.

The future of purebred dogs depends on more than winning ribbons. It depends on preserving sound breeding practices, ethical decision-making, and respect for those who came before us. By investing in dedicated newcomers who are willing to learn, and by encouraging them to one day mentor others, we ensure that our breeding programs—and our breeds—continue to thrive for generations to come. Our greatest legacy isn’t just the dogs we produce; it’s the people we inspire to carry our work forward.
